As of 2024, there are 265 universities in Nigeria, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC). Of this, there are 53 Federal Universities, 63 State Universities, and 149 Private Universities [See Full List of Nigerian Universities].
The latest World Universities Ranking (2024) but Times Higher Education has ranked 39 of the 265 Universities among the global best—however, none featured in the top 800 list.

1. Covenant University

Covenant University is a Nigerian tertiary institution founded in 2002 at Ota, Ogun state. Its current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Abiodun Humphrey Adebayo.

The University is ranked no.1 best in Nigeria, and between 801-1000 globally, same position as Clarkson University, United States and University of Clermont Auvergne, France.

2. University of Ibadan (UI)

University of Ibadan (UI) is a Nigerian tertiary institution founded in 1948. It is also the first University in Nigeria.
The current Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan is Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale.

The University currently ranks second best in Nigeria, a spot behind Covenant University in Ota. It ranked 801-1000 globally, same position as Howard University, United States and Ilam University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

3. Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)

Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is a Nigerian tertiary institution established in 1981.
The current (April 2024) Vice Chancellor of the University is Professor Adenike Oladiji.

The Universit currently ranks third best in Nigeria and 1001-1200 globally, same position as European University of Madrid, Spain and Fayoum University, Egypt.

4. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a Nigerian tertiary insititution established in 1962.
The current Vice Chancellor of the University is Professor Folasade T Ogunsola.

The University currently ranks fourth best in Nigeria and 1001-1200, same position as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana and University of La Laguna, Spain.

5. Bayero University, Kano (BUK)

Bayero University is located in Kano, a city in northern Nigeria and the capital of Kano State. It is the second largest city in Nigeria after Lagos.
The first university in the state, it was founded in 1975 when it was upgraded from Bayero University College to a fully accredited university.
There are two colleges within the university: the colleges of health science and natural and pharmaceutical sciences. Between them there are 11 faculties including the faculties of arts and Islamic studies, agricultural sciences, computer science and information technology, communication, engineering, earth and environmental sciences, education, law, management sciences, social sciences and veterinary medicine.
The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Sagir Abbas.
